Sudanese Antiquities in the Shadow of the April 15 War

The study aimed to analysis the impact of the April 15 war on archaeologists and archaeological research activities in Sudan. To achieve this goal, we organized it through reviewing archaeological research and researchers in three stages: before, during, and after the recent April 15 war. The stage preceding the war, which is part of Sudan's history of wars and conflicts, cast a shadow over various aspects of cultural and scientific life, including the archaeology sector. One of the causes of these conflicts was cultural identity. Despite the importance of this aspect, archaeologists did not adequately participate in addressing these issues, even though they possess material evidence preserved in the archaeological record. The study showed that the displacement experienced by researchers had a significant negative impact on archaeological research activities. Many research projects were halted, even those located in areas not directly affected by the war. However, researchers, with the help of their international partners, tried to organize their efforts to protect Sudanese heritage despite the significant challenges they faced. The study used the deductive method and collected data through a questionnaire formulated in a Google Form, directed at Sudanese archaeologists, and referred to a number of published literatures, especially on the topic of cultural identity. The study concluded with a main recommendation that the issue of Sudan's cultural identity, which has been one of the drivers of past and current conflicts, should be a central focus for archaeologists in the period following the end of the war. This requires greater emphasis on studying and documenting cultural heritage as part of ongoing efforts to rebuild the Sudan and the unity of the Sudanese people.
